Balance and Neuropathy Treatment

One of the more common but sometimes under diagnosed components of some forms of peripheral neuropathy is loss of balance. Patients will often say “I don’t have neuropathy; I only walk like I’ve had a few drinks”. This is why it is so crucial to address balance and neuropathy treatment.

In the clinic, we call this “gait” changes. Of course, there are many neurologic disorders that can cause you to walk abnormally or to lose your balance.

But this loss of balance occurs frequently in peripheral neuropathy and sometimes its the very first things patients notice.  This is primarily due to changes in sensation in your feet to touch, as well as position sense, or what doctors call proprioception.

One of the most important things to recognize is that left untreated, this problem often gets worse. It requires not only treatment for the neuropathy component but also rehabilitation to help retrain balance and coordination, wherever this is possible.

There are some very simple steps they can be taken almost immediately to prevent catastrophic falls and help balance and neuropathy treatment.

The first thing is to make sure that proper footwear is worn at all times. Secondly, remove common hazards around the household such as objects upon stairs, rugs without non-slip backing or pads, spilled liquids on the floor etc.

Be especially careful in kitchens and bathrooms.  Once neuropathy treatment has begun, we’ll instruct you in a series of exercises to help retrain your nervous system.

This is only possible when adequate balance and neuropathy treatment has been able to improve sensation to the soles of your feet, and position sense to your toes and ankles and knees.

This is why getting care early can go along way towards helping possible neuropathy recovery, but also set the stage for a return to a more active lifestyle.

Remember, the sooner you act, the sooner you improve.

Could Gluten and Neuropathy be Connected?

All of us can remember at some point in time, walking into a bakery or kitchen where fresh breads and pastries were being made.

The aroma can be overwhelming and draws us in like magnets.

Now once upon a time most especially when human beings were extremely physically active, bread was in fact the staff of life. There was no problem consuming massive amounts of carbohydrates as long as it was consumed during physical activity.

Well Flash Forward 300 years and the situation is now, entirely different. Not only are we less active but grains are often heavily processed, grown on nutrient deficient soils, or perhaps even GMO.

Breads and pastries are also sources of extremely high carbohydrate levels. In fact a sandwich can have 40 to 60 grams of carbohydrates!

And this has had an effect on neuropathy and our health in general.

With neuropathy, however, the stakes are higher. Gluten can and does cause celiac disease.

Sometimes in celiac disease, the only presentation is a gluten neuropathy.

Most of the time, however, it’s a simple fact that gluten can aggravate our bellies at the least and yes even our aches and pains, including neuropathy.

You see gluten is a gooey protein. That’s what gives bread that wonderful texture.

But most of us who stop eating gluten on regular basis find out quickly how much better we feel.

It appears that this is because even those of us who don’t have celiac disease and even test negative for allergy to gluten, may still be “sensitive”.

In patients suffering from gluten neuropathy, as well as in other patients, it appears that gluten may actually trigger inflammatory reactions. This adds to pain, stiffness, and possibly neuropathy symptoms.

However the evidence is not conclusive, and there are many that would argue this point.

What I can tell you, as a clinician, is that many patients feel so much better we feel it’s worth a try.

Best And Worst of At-Home Neuropathy Treatments

Better methods of controlling the pain and discomfort that peripheral neuropathy can bring are essential. By now you realize that there are a huge number of pills, potions, and gadgets etc… that are marketed to people who suffer from neuropathy and many other forms of chronic pain.

Many years ago when I became involved in the treatment of neuropathy and realized that this was inevitable due to the sheer number of people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy worldwide. And the huge numbers of patients is growing rapidly. Peripheral neuropathy now occurs in younger and younger ages.

Make no mistake about it this directly parallels our modern lifestyle and expanding waistlines. This of course is due to a high sugar, carbohydrate diets, and less physical activity.

In fact, the overall quality of diet and physical exercise for the vast majority of the population has deteriorated dramatically in the last 40 years.

All that said, doesn’t it make sense that these should be the primary targets of effective treatment?

Of course it does and even more so if you have the type of neuropathy that is directly related to obesity and poor fitness.

So why do these critical two components get ignored until it’s often too late?

This one is a combination of public health and healthcare professional education to be sure. The relentless push on you that all you need to do is to take this pill so that you feel better is an extreme disservice to both patients and their physicians alike.

But all neuropathy is not caused by lifestyle. Some are due to accidents, usage of certain medications, a side effect of surgery, genetics, or just bad luck.

All this means is that better methods of controlling the pain and discomfort that peripheral neuropathy can bring are essential.

The worst pain treatments are those that have no basis in science whatsoever; and there are plenty of them available. You only have to scan the aisles of your local pharmacies.

Employing other methods, which are researched and supported by science are our first choice both at home and in the clinic.

Questioning The Status Quo

One of the things that we find very challenging, and gets in the way of patient progress many times, is the patient’s unwillingness to question the status quo.

Now, if you suffer from neuropathy or indeed many forms of chronic pain, spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, etc. know that often times the only answers presented to you are drugs and more drugs.

By and large, our system does a terrible job of educating patients the impact that their lifestyles, diet, and fitness have on the progression and wherever possible reversal of their underlying diseases.

Question the status quo.

One of the fundamental reasons for this is that very little time in professional education is spent in these critical areas.

Furthermore, the constant barrage in all forms of media with drug-only solutions does tend to brainwash people. Also, it’s a sad fact that these tools are made available to patients with little or no cost out-of-pocket before potentially less harmful, less invasive alternatives.

Thanks to patients like you, however, all of this is changing.

Social networks like this continue to grow and bring alternative solutions to patients literally around the world.

Oftentimes though YOU need to carry this a step further when dealing with your healthcare professionals.

Ask more questions.

Be sure you fully engage your doctors and therapists!

You have every right to. After all, this is the only body you’ll ever get.

Talk neuropathy and pain treatment side effects. Talk risks versus benefits. Talk about trying alternative solutions FIRST!

Above all do something more every day to improve the quality of your health.

Just Diagnosed With Neuropathy? Now what?

Find a neuropathy treatment specialist who will work with your other healthcare providers.

“I was just diagnosed with neuropathy? Now what?”

This is the most common question we receive every day both by telephone, and on social media.

Unfortunately, most doctors in all disciplines are unprepared to answer that question.

The fact of the matter is we now know much more about effective neuropathy treatment than ever before.

But it is a specialty.

It takes a tremendous degree of training, education, and research for any of us in the healing arts to help our neuropathy friends and patients.

So here’s the best advice I can give you today if you were just diagnosed with neuropathy recently:

Number one: take diligent care of any underlying and urgent medical problems. For example, if you have diabetes, cancer, or heart disease, they must be managed in the best way possible.

Number two: seek immediate care from neuropathy treatment specialists who will work with your other healthcare providers to give you the most effective home and clinic care during the time of your greatest need.

And I don’t mean simply using medications that may only mask symptoms. I’m talking about taking corrective action wherever this is possible.

Number three: next and perhaps most difficult is to take a very hard look at your own health habits, which are often correctable. Diet and smoking are two big ones. Lack of regular activity, is another.

How can this possibly affect your neuropathy?

The answer is very significantly!

We know for example that being just 10 or 20 pounds overweight will have a significant negative impact on your body. Cholesterol, blood fats, and blood sugar tend to be higher. In many patients this alone over a long period of time is enough to cause neuropathy.

Can it really be this simple? The answer is yes!

But what is more challenging is learning the precise lifestyle, home care treatment, and dietary steps you should take on a daily basis.

Best Treatments for Common Neuropathy Forms

There is good potential for improvement, and even recovery, in common neuropathy forms in many patients. You need to make sure you are doing your part, but also that your treating clinician is doing everything they can for you as well!

If you are reading this, you already know something about peripheral neuropathy. You probably know millions are afflicted.

But you may not know there are many types: the most common ones are due to chemotherapy drugs, diabetes, and pre-diabetes, or metabolic syndrome.

In fact, metabolic syndrome may very well be responsible for the majority of cases that are now labeled “Idiopathic”. The Idiopathic means we just aren’t sure what the cause is.

Nevertheless, there is good potential for improvement, and even recovery, in these common neuropathy forms in many patients.

But recovery depends upon stimulating your healing capacity.

And there are several good tools which can help do just that. For example, we know a low-carb diet (I also prefer gluten and dairy-free), stopping smoking, and losing weight is key. Exercise and rehab under supervision often make a big difference too.

Research tells us our body produces substances that help nerves heal. These are called neurotropins.

So, what are the best ways to help your body along?

Well, in addition to the things we just mentioned, maintaining good mental health is key. In fact, one study showed significantly higher levels of neurotropins in people who “were in love”!

The same study also looked at electric stimulation. The results were somewhat surprising. Indications are: less is often more!

In this study, neuropathy treatment electrotherapies that are too powerful, administered for too long, or too high a frequency produced less than favorable results.

We also know that accommodation to treatment is a factor. This occurs when our bodies “get used to” any one therapy, or even a drug. It also helps explain why patient progress can seemingly plateau.

All of this highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to neuropathy treatment.

You need to make sure you are doing your part, but also that your treating clinician is doing everything they can for you as well!
