Just Keep It Simple. Sage advice that so often works, but only if you pay attention. Too often patients are chasing this doctor or that, this new pill or that, in search of relief rather than getting to the bottom of what may be actually causing their issues

One of the things that is most serious but far too often ignored in cases of neuropathy, fibromyalgia, many forms of chronic pain and indeed many chronic illnesses is the impact that daily habits and of course our lifestyles have on both the prevention and progression of diseases and illnesses.

Too often, in our society there is a rush to look for a magic pill to cover up symptoms rather than to find out what is really going on that could be perpetuating or in fact causing chronic health issues.

The most common of course in our society now is lack of fitness and excess and poor food consumption. Plain and simple, this causes more disease than any other single factor.

So you would think the smartest thing to do would be to start here when dealing with neuropathy or other health problem. Unfortunately, we find patients are conditioned far too often chasing this doctor or that, this drug or that, in search of relief rather than getting to the bottom of what may be actually causing their neuropathy.

Now this is not to say that bad things don’t happen to good people. Of course they do! This is where some of the most amazing drugs and surgery have a very wonderful place. But for the vast majority of what we see in practice every day the solutions to so many health problems are often right under our noses!

But what are you TO DO?

The first thing to understand is that “everything” doesn’t make you sick. Too often patients fall into this dismal pattern of thinking, based upon popular press and media. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everything doesn’t make you sick but many poor things in combination certainly do!

The most common of these is surrounding yourself with poor food choices, lack of regular daily fitness, and filling your home with possible environmental toxins. If this is the case, then the starting point for you is obvious!

Vanadium, Pain and Illness Connections?

This could possibly be a connection between vanadium #neuropathy #diabetes #fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain.

Last time, we spoke about the role of trace elements in health and nutrition.

By definition, trace elements are those necessary for life and growth however, only in the tiniest amounts.

Vanadium and Boron are two more ultra trace elements we should talk about.

In some studies the element Boron has been found to help reduce the loss of calcium in our bodies. Therefore, it may actually have a positive and protective role in bone density maintenance.

In most situations, boron is relatively nontoxic in the forms most consumed by people. Boric acid for example has long been used as a preparation in health care with very rare adverse incidents.

Vanadium, another ultra trace element seems to have a role in potentiating the activities of insulin and blood sugar control. This of course could possibly be part of the connection between vanadium, neuropathy, diabetes, fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain.

I will caution you however, never to self-treat with vanadium supplements alone. To do so could be very dangerous!

Like everything, however you will find individual supplements and claims made for so many individual nutrients. Boron and vanadium are no exception. Be very careful here.

If you consume a diet that is high in vegetables, seeds nuts and the lean proteins, a deficiency of trace elements is extremely rare. Although, not impossible, there are variations in the quality of food based upon such things as the soils in which they are grown and the regions they come from.

Also, if you are supplementing your diet as we recommend, trace elements in very tiny absorbable forms are included.

Rarely should they be prescribed alone and in our opinion, always under close medical supervision.

Because everybody is different, in rare situations deficiencies of these elements can cause significant health issues. There are different tests available.

This is another reason why it is difficult to diagnose conditions, trace element analysis by hair and urine are often very helpful.

Once again, you can see the need for working with a healthcare professional who is trained in managing your neuropathy and chronic pain. Look at all possible facets, dig deeper for answers whenever necessary.

Why “Hydration” is So Crucial to Feeling Our Best.

Maintaining adequate hydration can help us feel best!

Almost invariably when we see a new chronic pain patients in our practice, we discuss health habits and we find more often than not, failure to drink adequate amount of water is almost universal.

So why is that? Why would not drinking enough water tend to cause more widespread pains? There are several reasons and the answers are not complicated. You see the vast majority of our body is made of water. Blood and all the critical fluids keep us functioning like well-oiled machines.

Our kidneys, brain and all our other vital organs use these fluids to communicate and also perform daily purification’s.

But yet most of us don’t pay nearly enough attention to this key fact.

So rather than going through our days drinking fluids, most especially water that will keep our blood and fluid volumes high, we tend to over consume caffeine and worse yet soft drinks and perhaps even alcohol which depletes our water reserves even further.

If we don’t drink enough water we can suffer an impaired ability of our vital organs like kidneys and liver that help rid our bodies of toxic wastes. Dehydration can help make us stiff sore and uncomfortable.

If you already suffer from neuropathy or chronic pain, becoming even slightly dehydrated will make you feel a whole lot worse.

So how much water do you need to drink? In the absence of kidney or heart disease the proverbial eight glasses a day is about right. A more accurate consumption is approximately half your body weight in ounces in a 24-hour period.* This is not 100 percent accurate but it’s a darn good approximation. So for example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you’d be consuming approximately 75 ounces of no-alcohol fluids (mostly water!) during the course of the daily 24-hour period.

There are of course other factors which may require more or less water consumption. This of course includes how much you perspire, the outside air temperature, and yes even the humidity.

As always you need to work with your physician on your own personal medical issues that you may have questions or concerns about. We so often find simple blood and urine tests which measure your electrolytes and relative hydration are a big help in personally calculating best fluid recommendations! Working together by maintaining adequate hydration can help you suffer less chronic pain and maybe neuropathy pain too!

“But, Doctor, It Hurts When I Exercise” is a commonly discussed issue with patients. If you struggle with neuropathy, complications from diabetes, post-chemo nerve pain, or any other painful medical condition, it can be really easy to just do nothing.

By now, everyone knows that exercise is good for you.

It helps to not only lose weight but keep your weight under control…

Using bicycles and similar low-impact equipment can be very beneficial.

It strengthens your bones…

It improves your cardiovascular health…

It has even been shown to fight depression…

And if you happen to have diabetes, you know how important exercise is in managing your glucose levels.

But what do you do when your neuropathy or some other painful condition just makes it hurt to work out?

If you struggle with neuropathy, complications from diabetes, post-chemo nerve pain, or any other painful medical condition, it can be really easy to just sit around and do nothing.

Because it just hurts too much to be active.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are exercises you can do that won’t tax your painful joints or cause you more pain than you already have.

Here are a few exercises to consider that are easy on the body and only require gentle movements:

Yoga

Yoga will keep you limber and stretches the muscles in slow, easy, fluid movements. You can do it as slowly as you like. You don’t have to qualify as a Cirque Du Soleil acrobat to get the benefits of a good yoga practice. Just do the postures to the best of your ability. If it has been a while since you’ve exercised, don’t expect to be limber overnight. Give yourself time.

Yoga stretches the muscles and increases muscle strength simply by using the body’s own weight. No extra equipment, no extra weight on painful joints or swollen feet. Just what you already carry. That’s tailor made for people suffering from nerve pain.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a very slow moving martial art. Each and every movement is done slowly and through a complete cycle, works every muscle group in the body. Even though it is not a strenuous exercise program, the health benefits for your bones and muscles are undeniable.

Once again, Tai Chi uses the body’s own weight to strengthen the muscles. Your sore joints and swollen tissue aren’t subjected to increased weight. And because the movements are slow and fluid, no added pain from sore muscles to complicate the symptoms of neuropathy that you already suffer from.

Swimming

If your joints are so painful that walking is not a good option for exercise, try swimming. Your movements are easier in water and you will put little weight or pressure on your feet. Make sure that the water is warm, not cold. Prolonged exposure to cold water will have a detrimental effect on your circulation and make a bad situation worse.

Swimming is also a wonderful way to strengthen your cardiovascular system and do so without taxing your limited strength. If you suffer from pain in your legs and feet, the buoyancy of the water takes some of the pressure off your extremities. Just being in the water can provide some relief from the pain in your nerves.

Stretching

Stretching exercises are a great way to increase muscle strength without causing your tender nerves more pain. You can even stretch while lying in bed.

This is a good stretching program that will give you a good total body stretch without ever getting on your feet. Do each of these small stretches 6 or 8 times:

  • Start with your fingers and toes and gently stretch and contract them
  • Next, move to your wrists and ankles and make circles with the joints
  • Bend your elbows, bring your hands in to your shoulders
  • Bend your knees, one at a time, toward your chest
  • Bring your arms up to your ears and down, gently stretching your shoulder muscles
  • Raise each leg, keep it straight, and raise it as far as you can.

None of these stretches requires a broad range of motion but will increase the circulation in your arms and legs and work your joints.

Remember, you don’t have to over exert yourself to stretch your muscles and improve your circulation. When you deal with debilitating pain, just doing those two things can lead to great improvement in your overall health condition.

Start small, take it easy and do the exercise you choose at your own pace. Be gentle with yourself. The more you do even the smallest exercise, the better you are going to feel. And that’s the best way to ensure a good outcome from any neuropathy treatment.

“My doctor says I have neuropathy, and I need to live with it.”

“My doctor says I have neuropathy, and I need to live with it. Is this true?” This is the most common question we receive every day both by telephone, and in the social media.

Unfortunately, most doctors in all disciplines are unprepared to answer that question. The fact the matter is we now know much more about effective neuropathy treatment than ever before. It takes a tremendous degree of training, education, and research for any of us in the healing arts to help our neuropathy patients.

So here’s the best advice I can give you today. Number one: take diligent care of any underlying and urgent medical problems first. For example, if you have diabetes, cancer, or heart disease, they must be managed in the best way possible.

Next, seek immediate care from physicians who will work with your other healthcare providers to give you the most effective home and clinic care during the time of your greatest need. And I don’t mean simply prescribing. I’m talking about taking corrective action wherever this is possible.

Third and perhaps the most difficult is to take a very hard look at your own health habits, which are often correctable. Diet and smoking are two big ones. Lack of regular activity, is another.

How can this possibly affect your neuropathy? The answer is very significantly!

We know for example that being just 10 or 20 pounds overweight will have a significant negative impact on your body. Cholesterol, blood fats, and blood sugar tend to be higher.

In many patients this alone over a long period of time is enough to cause neuropathy. Can it really be this simple? The answer is yes! But what is more challenging is learning the precise lifestyle, home care and dietary steps you should take on a daily basis. That’s why we are here! Let’s Talk About Vitamin B7 or Biotin Deficiency

Biotin deficiency tends to show as a skin rash, as well as fatigue, depression, and even as peripheral neuropathy-like symptoms.

Biotin is one of those nutrients that are not commonly known any longer as a vitamin. In the so-called “normal” healthy population, real deficiencies are rare because our normal intestinal bacteria can manufacture large amounts of biotin. There are, however, some things in common with biotin and the other vitamins.

Portrait of a doctorBiotin is another of those vitamins commonly added to cosmetics in products for hair, nails and skin. Unfortunately, the real hard evidence supporting such usage appears to be relatively slim.

Primarily, biotin deficiency like other B-vitamin deficiencies, tends to show as a skin rash, as well as fatigue, depression, as well as peripheral neuropathy-like symptoms.

Biotin deficiency can affect hair and skin health; such is the rationale for adding biotin to personal care products. This may be more severe in diabetics and alcoholics.

In diabetes, it may actually be that the need for biotin is greater than average. We also know that when diabetic patients are given biotin supplementation, along with the other B-vitamins, blood lipid and sugar profiles can improve.

Biotin is largely available in a wide variety of foods. But unlike some other nutrients we have recently discussed, biotin is present only in very small amounts. If you follow the NeuropathyDR Diet, it will be very hard to be deficient in biotin. This is especially true if you follow our advice with regard to frequent leafy green and other vegetable consumption.

There are, of course, exceptions. If you have been on long-term antibiotics, which can kill normal intestinal bacteria, you could be at risk for a biotin deficiency.

Some genetic disorders means certain patients need higher amounts of biotin than others.

Lastly, intestinal surgery and gastric bypass procedures affect absorption of many vitamins. Biotin is no exception.

Eggs and swiss chard are said to contain the highest amount of biotin foods. Raw eggs are not a good food source; cooked ones actually contains fair amounts of available biotin. Because of the danger of salmonella, we don’t recommend raw egg consumption anyway.

So you can see again that, like in so much of good nutrition, a wide variety of foods are really key to helping prevent deficiencies, low intakes, and the health problems they can cause–including peripheral neuropathy!

About Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is a nutrient that, like all vitamins, is essential to health, life and just feeling great! Vitamin B3 helps our bodies convert food into energy, burn fat properly, and is largely responsible for helping us feel energized!

Did you know that vitamin B3 is a common ingredient in *energy drinks?

The reason for this is simple. Without vitamin B3, or niacin, our body is unable to function. For many patients, it is lacking due to poor diet. Consuming a diet high in processed foods is likely to be low in niacin. Consuming alcohol can also lower vitamin B3 levels too.

In the neuropathy clinic, mild deficiencies of niacin are probably relatively common. Frank niacin deficiency can cause the disease called pellagra. Pellagra is disease characterized by the three D’s: diarrhea, dermatitis, and dementia.

In very severe niacin deficiencies, significant changes occur to the nervous system.

These changes can show up as psychiatric symptoms and, as we mentioned earlier, dementia or brain disease. More commonly, especially in modern society, are lower levels of niacin then are optimal, possibly making worse some very common conditions, including high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.

A proper diet should include a good food sources of niacin. Many nuts are also high in niacin. Avocado and shiitake mushrooms are also high in niacin. Vitamin B3 as niacinamide is also a common ingredient in many multivitamins and other dietary supplements.

Since niacin is available in two different common forms (niacin and niacinamide), we recommend often advise patients to consume both forms in small amounts. The reason for this is they will tend to act somewhat differently, both having beneficial effects.

Measuring vitamin B3 levels requires a little more work than a simple blood test. Blood tests for niacin are often unreliable, so special urine tests need to be performed.

Like so many nutrients, it is important to remember that diet must be the number one method of obtaining proper nutrition. It is also critical to understand that each nutrient is just like a key instrument in a symphony.

And just like a symphony does not work when one instrument does not play properly, the same is true in nutrition–especially in pain & neuropathy nutrition!

About Thiamine or Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is an essential nutrient. By essential nutrient, we simply mean that if we don’t consume it, as human beings, we can die. This frequently happens in alcohol abuse where it can lead to serious brain injury. In fact, Beriberi is a disease caused by thiamine deficiency. Fortunately, this is now quite rare in modern societies. It can, however, still be seen in certain parts of the world.

Beyond this, what’s most important to the neuropathy patient is the role B1 has in our health. One of the key things B1 does is help our cells, especially nerve cells, produce energy—and produce it more efficiently. Unfortunately, many people still do not get enough essential nutrients due to poor diet.

Typically, a poor diet is very high in sugar, as well as carbohydrates. Carbohydrates require thiamine to be metabolized (or readily used up), and high-carbohydrate diets can cause depletion. Milder forms of deficiency are still one of the most common causes of just feeling “blah”.

One of the things that is been particularly important in our neuropathy and pain treatment result is that certain forms of thiamine, most especially allithiamine, which is naturally occurring in crushed garlic, can have a profound effect on nerve cell function. Our pharmacists have compounded a special topical form called NDReGen Creme that we find very helpful in the pain of shingles, neuropathy and sometimes CRPS (Complex Regional; Pain Syndrome).

Some of the best natural sources of B1 include foods like asparagus, kale, cauliflower, and even oranges. Sunflower seeds and whole-grain rye are also good sources.

But one of the biggest mistakes too many patients make is to think that one single nutrient can heal us. This is only true in pure single nutrient deficiencies. Wouldn’t life be wonderful if it was that simple? This is why neuropathy and pain patients need to be very careful about which treatments and, especially which neuropathy treatment professionals they ask for help.

Sometimes, supplementing with vitamin B1 can be dangerous. If you suffer from cancer or certain other diseases, taking supplemental B1 in any form can create serious problems.

This is why it’s essential that you work with your physicians and continue to stay a well-informed patient.

Make Better Treatment Decisions

It was not that long ago that neuropathy and chronic pain patients had very few treatment options. Now though, how can we all make better treatment decisions? For a very long time, health professionals just focused on drug therapy to calm neuropathy and pain symptoms.

Physical Therapy

When patients take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their pain and “idiopathic” neuropathy often starts to improve!.

In fact, many patients AND their own doctors still believe this is the only approach to neuropathy and pain treatment. But you know better, and that is why you are here!

We now know that there is a place for active treatment in many forms of pain, especially neuropathy.

For example, we know the most common form of neuropathy is “idiopathic neuropathy” meaning, by definition, “no known cause”. Many cases formerly called “idiopathic” are, in fact, due to metabolic syndrome, an issue for many in modern society that, over many years, creates too much body fat and not enough lean muscle. This is sometimes still called pre-diabetes because without better lifestyle, food and activity decisions, many patients with metabolic syndrome will become diabetic!

*Drug-only neuropathy therapy alone will not change this.

But the good news is that when patients apply their own decisions to take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their “idiopathic” may begin to improve, especially while using an active treatment system.

The sad part is, many doctors and patients still attempt to treat just with drugs to calm the symptoms like tingling, numbness and burning so many neuropathy patients suffer from. Worse yet, when patients are given high blood pressure or cholesterol lowering medication to treat metabolic syndrome this form of neuropathy can actually worsen!
